The Town of Oak Island will accept decoration-free trees and put them in selected areas on the beach with the hope that the trees will trap and hold sand. This cooperative program with the Beach Preservation Society Inc. can serve as a great demonstration for maintaining and building dunes naturally.
On February 1, starting at 9 a.m., the public is invited to assist Town of Oak Island staff and members of the Beach Preservation Society in placing the trees on the beach between the Oak Island Pier and the McGlamery Street access. Call the Town's Public Works Department at 910-201-8083 to volunteer to help place trees on the beach.
NOTE: Residents can drop off natural Christmas trees at the parking lot between SE 46th and SE 48th Street through January 27. Please enter the parking lot from Dolphin Drive, and follow signs to the dropoff area. Trees left curbside will also be collected. Trees must be free of lights and all decorations. No artificial trees can be used on the beach.
