Adopt-A-Beach Access Program

The Town of Oak Island has 67 public beach accesses. Enhance the Oak Island beach experience and leave the beach better for everyone by adopting a beach access! Adoption is open to the public – individuals, families, businesses, church groups or civic organizations. An adult must supervise minors.

In general, participants are responsible for:

  • Cleaning the parking area associated with the access, and cleaning the beach (from the seaward toe of the dune/first line of vegetation to low tide) halfway to the next access in both directions. Cleaning should be done at least once a month, especially before, during or after major holidays and events.

  • Requesting pick-up of storm debris, tires and other large or heavy items.

  • Reporting damages to parking areas, signs, sand fence, dune vegetation and trash cans. Contact same as above.

  • Helping occasionally with other access-related projects, if requested.

  • Maintaining the dog bag box for accesses with a mailbox and for some other specifically designated accesses.
