Dr. Ryan Mieras, Assistant Professor in Coastal Engineering at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, will lead the lecture.

Dr. Mieras earned both his Ph.D. and M.C.E. in Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Delaware in 2017 and 2014, respectively. He holds a B.S in Ocean Engineering from Texas A&M University (2011). Prior to academia, Mieras worked at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory – Stennis Space Center as a National Research Council, Postdoctoral Fellow from 2017-2019, where he developed technology to measure sediment concentration in the coastal swash zone (US patent pending). To date, he has secured nearly $2 million in federal funding from agencies including the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. His research encompasses nearshore sediment transport and hydrodynamic processes via field and laboratory studies, serving to improve our understanding of the physical processes driving coastal flooding and geomorphology in a changing climate. His recent research activities include applied instrumentation development, extreme event reconnaissance observation platforms, post-storm beach recovery, and affordable LiDAR and remote sensing coastal observation systems.

Fort Fisher Summer Aquarium Program - SEA TURTLE 911

This program features outreach educators from the NC Aquarium at Ft. Fisher, presenting a free, hour-long program to engage visitors, families and summer campers in learning about and interacting with the animals that live in the sea.

Sea Turtles need our help STAT! Participants discover some of the challenges that these protected species face by taking on the roles of sea turtle Veterinarians. Together we diagnose our sea turtle patients' injury or illness and we discuss the best treatment so our patients can return to the sea. No live sea turtles are included in this presentation, though their land and freshwater turtle friends will visit to aid in understanding characteristics and adaptations that each type of turtle needs for life in its habitat.

Christmas by the Sea Parade

The Oak Island Beach Preservation Society is excited to participate again in this great family event!

The parade showcases the businesses and organizations in our community. The hometown feel of the parade makes it a favorite event for locals, second homeowners, and visitors.

The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Town of Oak Island has organized the Christmas By The Sea parade for over 38 years. "The parade is a cherished holiday tradition," said Jackie Pappas, Parade co-chair for the Chamber.

The parade steps off at 2:00 p.m. beginning on East Oak Island Drive in front of Town Hall and making it's way eastward, ending at McGlamery Street. As always, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be the final float at the end of the parade waving to children and the young at heart as they drive by.

For more information contact Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce, 4433 Long Beach Road, Southport, (910) 457-6964, or visit www.christmasbytheseaparade.com.

Normal traffic safety rules apply. Spectators (riding only) in cars, trucks, or golf carts will be permitted along the parade route.
